Characterization of Three-Dimensional Internal Structure Evolution in Asphalt Mixtures during Freeze–Thaw Cycles

چکیده

This paper aims to characterize the three-dimensional (3D) internal structure evolution of asphalt mixtures under freeze–thaw cycles. Asphalt with three levels design void content (3%, 5%, and 7%) were prepared in laboratory. Subsequently, X-ray computed tomography (CT) tests conducted capture two-dimensional (2D) images samples before after testing. A set image processing techniques for reconstructing 3D utilized extract properties, which then used analyze changes air distributions evaluate reconstructed from CT illustrated a dramatic degradation cyclic exposure. The change occurs mainly ways: (1) expansion existing individual voids, (2) combination two separated (3) generation new voids. In addition, parametric analysis voids revealed that mixture ratio increased number cycles, while larger initial content, more pronounced increase specimens. Therefore, resistance should be optimized relation content.

Internal Structure Features of Asphalt Mixture for Field Samples

Asphalt mixture is heterogeneous in nature; therefore, macroscopic parameters alone cannot describe the mechanical behavior of the mixture. In recent years, the arrangement of the aggregate particles in terms of spatial and directional distributions, and contact points are considered as the internal structure of asphalt. The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the microstructural chara...

Characterization of Hot Bituminous-Asphalt Mixtures with Recycled Polyurethane Foam

Received: June 06, 2017 Revised: July 05, 2017 Accepted: July 19, 2017 Abstract: Introduction: The use of polymer wastes in pavement as road is an increasing trend in the road construction sector. Those new pavements reduce the amount of solid waste disposed into landfills and provide more sustainable construction due to the use of in-situ materials. Polyurethane foam waste is a thermostable po...

Characterization of three-dimensional structure using images.

The pair correlation function g(r) and the number density n for particles in a three-dimensional (3D) sample can be determined from a single two-dimensional (2D) image. The 2D image is obtained experimentally with a simple setup: a cross-sectional slab of particles is illuminated with a laser sheet and imaged with a single camera. After image analysis, to find positions of particles in two dime...

Thermoelastic Interaction in a Three-Dimensional Layered Sandwich Structure

The present article investigates the thermoelastic interaction in a three-dimensional homogeneous and isotropic sandwich structure using the dual-phase-lag (DPL) model of generalized thermoelasticity. The incorporated resulting non-dimensional coupled equations are applied to a specific problem in which a sandwich layer of unidentical homogeneous and isotropic substances is subjected to time-de...

Effects of Compactor Types on Aggregate Orientation of Asphalt Mixtures

More than 90% of Malaysian roads are constructed using asphaltic concrete. However, previous investigations of asphaltic concrete have mainly concentrated on the macroscopic properties of the composite materials based on the assumption that the mixtures are homogeneous and isotropic. This paper applies a digital image processing technique to compare the orientations of coarse aggregate particle...
